Front Doorways: Period Homes

One of the most iconic elements of a period home is the stepped approach to the front doorway, which was originally designed not only for aesthetic appeal but also for practical purposes.

Architects sought to emphasise symmetry and balanced proportions, the raised entryway, often with steps leading up to a pedimented doorway was one of the features which was also partly practical. Many cities were built with basements for servants’ quarters and kitchens, so raising the main entrance provided an elegant way to conceal these service areas below. This layout also allowed homeowners a sense of privacy and separation from the street level, which was bustling and often muddy.

The eventual replacement of the steps calls upon the skills of traditional stone masons who can sympathetically replace and rebuild the steps using their time-honoured knowledge.

We work with many stone masons and can recommend one if required.

The photo below shows our pennant sand stone, quarried, sawn and worked by our team of masons.
